In Huna, we have a number of words involving the word Ha. You will start to see the importance of this, for the concept of the Breath and the Breath of Life is very central to Hawaiian wisdom. A good definition of it is this could be: “Hawaiian wisdom is the science of the gaining control of the Universal Life Energies by the control of the Breath and control of our three Minds.”

We hope that by now you begin to see how important it is to have the correct translations of the words in order to learn the hidden secrets of the Kahuna. Not only did the correct translations reveal a working, successful method of psychiatry, they also revealed the practical, scientific explanation of so called miracles and how they are done.

There are some very basic concepts which need to be understood before you can fully appreciate these deeper aspects.

At the very core of it all is the complete understanding of their concept of the three minds, or Selves of the physical unit. “Unit” is referring to the united parts of the complete human being which is made up of several parts, starting with the three minds, or selves, plus the physical body.

Two of these minds are basically within the body. The third mind is basically outside the body. All three of these, together with the physical body, make up the unit. We believe that the brain is not the mind. We believe that it is only the mechanism used by the three minds to control and use the body. The purpose of the body is being the vehicle in which all the rest live in this lifetime.

The Hawaiian called the first of these minds, the Unihipili, and is at times referred to as the Lower Self. This is not because it is lowly in any way, but that it is below the level of our consciousness. In modern English we call it, the subconscious.

The subconscious has many important jobs to do. It controls all the autonomic functions of the body. It is the storehouse of all our memory. It is only through the Subconscious that we can contact, or be contacted by, the High Self, to receive advice, inspiration, healing or any other so-called “help from on High.”

The subconscious has very limited reasoning power and unless otherwise directed it will react to anything and everything based directly upon the sum total of previous programming, as put there by us or by our parents and teachers, priests, friends, etc., and even by our own reading and thinking patterns. It has no power to do otherwise. Our problems today, happens when incorrect or illogical programming has been put into our subconscious because the results of this programming is what will come out. Just as with the computer, garbage in, garbage out!

The subconscious is the seat of emotions, never logic. It reacts and never initiates action. Laughing, crying, loving, even hating, are spontaneous reactions by the subconscious to previous programming, and will be logical or illogical depending on that previous input.

Hawaiians called our conscious mind, the Uhane. We refer to as the Middle Self and compare it to the conscious mind. The Uhane is the one who reasons, thinks and speaks. We use this conscious mind when we decide to have a little talk with our self (the subconscious mind), look at the possible reactions and decide objectively which to do.

In the Huna teaching, it is these two minds which inhabit the unit, or reside within the body. Uhane is the speaking, conscious one. The Unihipili is the subconscious one, the one that never rest, working for us day and night. How often do we stop to give a “thank you” for all the work it does for us!

The third part of the mental trinity is basically located outside of the body and the Hawaiians called it Aumakua. In modern English, we call this the Higher Self and it is located outside and above our bodies. Above that is Creator Spirit, too great to be understood by a mortal.
